The London-based,Guyanese flautist Keith Waithe and Ray Seales, a
Tampa-based,Guyanese music producer have inspired the CONCERTS FOR
GUYANA project.
Their vision is to mobilize Guyanese artists -- musicians,
spoken-word performers, writers,dancers, painters, sculptors,etc --
for a series of concerts. The purpose of the concert series is to
help raise the morale of Guyanese at home by telling them that they
are loved by the diaspora. Another purpose is to raise funds to
contribute to post -flood rehabilitation.
The response to their call has been overwhelming. As a result,
several concerts are being organized around the world starting in
London and Georgetown on February 20,2005.
By May 26,2005, the 39'th anniversary of Guyana's independence,
other concerts will be organized in Barbados, Miami, New York,
Toronto and Washington,D.C.
The CONCERTS FOR GUYANA will be transmitted to Guyana by satellite
where they will be aired on local television and radio. The entire
concert series will be available on the Internet for post-concert
viewing.
Ohio University, the Guyana Folk Festival Committee and others are
happy to be associated with the CONCERTS FOR GUYANA.
The organizers of the CONCERTS FOR GUYANA wish to express their
sincerest thanks to the British High Commission, Georgetown, Guyana
; British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, London; BBC, Siemens
Buisness Services, and Panamsat for their help in making the
satellite transmission between London and Guyana on Sunday, February
20, 2005, possible.
